This Doula Learning Channel Course is 38 minutes in length.

This course is designed to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the Safe Sleep Guidelines as set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Learners will gather insight into various family sleep scenarios and will gain the ability to respectfully navigate discussions surrounding safe and unsafe infant sleep. Additionally, learners will establish the ability to distinguish and convey the importance of healthful sleep hygiene and self-care for those caring for infants.

Course Learning objective: 

This course is designed to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the Safe Sleep Guidelines as set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Learners will gather insight into various family sleep scenarios and will gain the ability to respectfully navigate discussions surrounding safe and unsafe infant sleep. Additionally, learners will establish the ability to distinguish and convey the importance of healthful sleep hygiene and self-care for those caring for infants.

Lesson 1 – Reviewing Safe Sleep Guidelines 

Learning Objective: In this lesson, learners will be guided through a thorough examination of the most current Safe Sleep Guidelines. The dangers of unsafe sleep will be clearly identified while learners are also provided with information regarding bed-sharing for those clients who prefer to do so.

Lesson 2 – Navigating Safe Sleep With Clients

Learning Objective: In this lesson, learners will be informed of the sensitivities of families who are struggling with sleep, and the nuances to be aware of when discussing safe sleep practices. In addition, learners will be provided with information regarding the effects of sleeplessness and what can result in accidental unsafe sleep. 

Lesson 3 – Putting It All Together

Learning Objective: In this lesson, the educator will demonstrate several examples of real-life family sleep scenarios and will provide detailed instruction on how to initiate discussions regarding safe sleep in a non-judgmental way for each.

Lesson 4 – Sleep Hygiene for the Doula

Learning Objective: In this lesson, learners will be equipped with the ability to identify healthy personal boundaries and how to navigate overnight work, sleep, and self-care as a doula.
